New Deans Academy

Community College Leadership Developoment Consortium

The New Deans Academy (NDA) is an intensive three-day designed for new academic deans or associate/assistant deans who have been in the role for one to three years

This intensive two-day Academy will deliver content aligning with several key topical areas and Competencies developed based on input from the Iowa community college Chief Academic Officers, a review of the literature on deans and academic leader development, and the American Association of Community Colleges Leadership Competencies (2023). The NDA was designed with the assumption that each college will continue to offer their own academic leader onboarding and orientation for location or field-specific knowledge.

Topical areas include:

  1. Enhancing Systems Thinking
  2. Building Teams & Guiding Collaboration
  3. Faculty Supervision
  4. Mentoring & Developing Faculty
  5. Financial Planning & Budget Management
  6. Strategic Planning
  7. Leading Compliance & Improvement
  8. Program Management
  9. Strategic Leadership
  10. Enhancing Systems Thinking

Format: Intensive two-day learning experience to include content delivery, interactive activities, and community building.

Participation is by nomination only, as the colleges cover the program costs and associated travel expenses.

NDA will be offered in June each year, if need is indicated by the Chief Academic Officers.
